HARARE Magistrate Vakayi Chikwekwe on Saturday 19 November 2016 set free six human rights defenders (HRDs) who were arrested on Friday 18 November 2016 and charged with protesting against the imminent introduction of bond notes.
Magistrate Chikwekwe granted $100 bail to Advocate Fadzayi Mahere aged 31 years, Nyasha Musandu aged 28 years, Henry Munangatire aged 32 years, Mudiwa Mahere aged 25 years, Talent Chademana aged 28 years, Thobekile Ncube aged 42 years, who were arrested by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers on Friday 18 November 2016 and charged with participating in a gathering with intent to promote public violence, breaches of the peace or bigotry as defined in Section 37 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 or alternatively disorderly conduct in contravention of Section 41 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
Prosecutors alleged that Mahere, Musandu, Munangatire, Mahere, Chademana and Ncube, who were represented by Jeremiah Bamu, Obey Shava and Dorcas Chitiyo of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, gathered at Africa Unity Square in Harare on Friday 18 November 2016 with intent to promote public violence, breaches of the peace or bigotry by displaying some placards inscribed with protest messages against the imminent introduction of bond notes by the government.
Magistrate Chikwekwe, who remanded the six HRDs to 01 December 2016 ordered them to report to ZRP station once every fortnight.
