ZIMBABWEAN police on Tuesday 02 August 2016 charged two more leaders of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) with undermining authority of or insulting President Robert Mugabe as authorities intensify an unprecedented clampdown on dissent among former allies of the ZANU PF leader.
Police charged Headman Moyo, the ZNLWVA National Vice Chairperson and Hoyini Samuel Bhila, ZNLWVA’s Vice Chairperson for Harare province after the two handed themselves to detectives at Harare Central Police Station’s Law and Order Section. The two, who reported at Harare Central Police Station accompanied by their lawyer Shingi Mutumbwa, had been advised that they were on the ZRP wanted list and Moyo travelled all the way from Lupane in Matabeleland North province to present himself to the police.
The ZNLWVA leaders were charged with undermining authority of or insulting President Robert Mugabe in contravention of Section 33 (2) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
Moyo and Bhila become the latest ZNLWVA leaders to be arrested in less than one week after Zimbabwe Republic Police officers first apprehended Douglas Mahiya, the liberation war veterans’ welfare organisation’s spokesperson last Wednesday before nabbing Victor Matemadanda, the secretary-general of ZNLWVA and Francis Nhando, the organisation’s National Commissar.
Mahiya is represented by Harrison Nkomo and Andrew Makoni of ZLHR while Matemadanda is represented by ZLHR board chairperson Beatrice Mtetwa. Nhando is represented by Shingi Mutumbwa and David Drury respectively with instructions from ZLHR.
